With not many big brands playing into the portable gaming segment, other than Sony and Nintendo that dabble in high end gaming devices,HCL Infosystems has jumped into the bandwagon with their range of gaming products. The devices that they claim are low cost and full of entertainment. We received their HCL ME K-28 for review. Lets see how the device fares.
The one that was sent to us was in a combination of orange, red and white, with most of the body being orange and the buttons and parts of the panel being white. The red is around the screen and keys. Though the device looks quite plastic at first glance, once it is switched on,the 2.4-inch screen impresses you quite a bit. The front of the device hosts the TFT screen with the power button and direction keys to its left and the reset,start/pause,turbo key,and two action keys A and B to its right. At the top of the device are the TV out slot and the volume control. At the back is the battery slot, which is covered by a screwable panel and holds 3 AAA size batteries. This is good, considering the age group for which the device is made.
Once switched on,we see the ME branded page and to navigate to the menu one has to use the action key A. Then move through the menu with the direction buttons to select the game needed and press Start/A to begin. There are 28 built-in games in the K-28 and more games cannot be added to it. The games are fun to play and one can easily get addicted to them. There are games like the Lightning Plan with a fighter plane and enemies for you to shoot, then there are agility based games like pin ball and puzzle oriented games like Busy Bong and Make Way that make one play and replay the game till the level is crossed. Then there are memory based games like Geet the Meet. The bunch provided is a good variety of games for children.
K28 comes with a single channel AV Out cable (a good move) for playing on television and the device connects to television easily with it. The output though not very enviable is pretty good considering its price. The sound is
decent too and can easily be controlled by the volume control. The device uses 3 AAA batteries and the as and when the batteries are low on power there are clear indications as to the need for battery change.
Though one thing I was not very happy about was that there arent any settings or instructions built in the device. One would need to keep the instruction manual to understand the game play and controls,at least till the time one becomes conversant with all the games. Overall, the ME K28 is a fun filled portable gaming console with a good bunch of games and the benefit of playing on television. All this and at its price, the gaming device is definitely worth checking out.
