Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi Saturday said he would ensure 50 per cent representation to women in the AICC and partys other wings in the next couple of years.
Making the promise during his first formal interaction with the new office-bearers of the AICC,Rahul also sought to send a strong message that he will not brook infighting and factionalism and asked the new team to work like a family. He also pointed out that there was lack of coordination in the team earlier.
Sources said Rahul had conveyed the same message when he held separate interactions, both individually and in groups, with secretaries and general secretaries in the last couple of days. He stressed there should be coordination. He plans to meet general secretaries thrice a month to take stock of situation in various states as the party prepares for the coming polls in five states and the bigger battle in 2014.
On Saturday,he also underscored the need to connect the party with masses. Sources said topics like forthcoming elections or the challenge posed by Narendra Modi were not discussed at the meeting which was more of an introductory kind.
Referring to Luizinho Faleiros the in charge of the northeastern states mention about seven sisters in his speech,Rahul, sources said, said he can see only six sisters here and promised to ensure 50 per cent representation to women. The six were general secretary Ambika Soni and the five secretaries.
He talked about how to ensure 50 per cent representation to women in AICC. Its not reservation, its about their representation. He said the presence of women is less but it will definitely be 50 per cent in 2-3 years, party spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das said.
