While the Indian Youth Congress is holding its national executive meeting in Srinagar, its leadership seems to have chosen to gloss over the issue of corruption in the election of office-bearers of the organisation. Even as the controversy over alleged rigging and corruption during elections to the Karnataka unit continue to haunt the organisation, insiders say similar complaints are coming from other states as well. In Karnataka, detractors of state Youth Congress president Rizwan Arshad have been putting pressure on the national leadership to take action, especially after an internal investigation team was learnt to have confirmed irregularities. The organisation, however,is reluctant to take action for the fear that it would give a bad name to the democratisation process initiated by Rahul Gandhi.

Termination Notice

THE government has terminated the services of Anil Yadav,a 1999-batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, who went missing after going on a two-year study leave in 2007. The government initiated disciplinary proceedings against him last year after he failed to report back to work. At this point,Yadav informed the government of his willingness to join back but it was already too late. Recently, the President issued an order saying Yadav is deemed to have resigned from the IAS. Yadav, incidentally,is not the only one of his kind in the IAS. Recently the case of L V Nilesh,a Maharashtra cadre officer, had also come to light. He too went on study leave, did not join back and was later found to be working for Microsoft in the United States. He too was terminated from service.

Gandhi in Tahrir

NAVDEEP Suri, the senior foreign service officer who got MEA into digital diplomacy, has come up with some out-of-the-box thinking in the Indian mission in Cairo. As the new Indian envoy to Egypt,he launched a poster competition on October 2 on an innovative theme: Did you sense the spirit of Gandhi in Tahrir Square? Hoping to capture the essence of Mahatma Gandhis message in last years mass demonstrations at Tahrir Square that led to the ouster of the regime of President Hosni Mubarak, the winners will be celebrated in January next year on the second anniversary of the start of that protest.

Issueless Birth

ARVIND Kejriwals virtually single-agenda political party that promises Lokpal within 10 days of coming to power and a new improved power structure in 15,has come up with a novel strategy to avoid taking positions on important national issues. Its vision document talks only about Lokpal, land acquisition, right to reject/ recall. Other issues are not even identified. That will be done,it says, after a tour of the country and asking people about possible solutions. Barring Yogendra Yadav,no speaker even bothered to deal with the need for a political party to take positions on national issues.
