Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS),which recently floated a union of film technicans and workers, have come out strongly against the Federation of Film Employees Kerala (FEKA) leading non-artistes union in Malayalam cinema.
Addressing a press meet in Thiruvananthapuram, leaders of BMS-affiliated Bachas (Bharatiya Chalachitra Sangethika Pravarthaka Sangham) alleged that FEFKA had been acting more like a syndicate than a trade union truly concerned about the rights and privileges of the work-force.
The situation prevailing in the Malayalam filmdom was such that if somebody wanted to enter it as technician or worker,he or she should get clearance from FEFKA by joining it by paying a hefty sum. Even the seasoned workers were boycotted if they declined to join FEFKA and work according to its conditions, they charged.
If anybody refused to go by the high-handedness of FEFKA,they would be denied their right to work. This approach had created lot of tension and unrest in Malayalam film world, the unions General Secretary P. Sasisdaharan and other leaders alleged.
Though these issues were raised during a discussion convened by the labour commissioner the other day,FEFKA and the film producers association had declined to give any firm assurance to co-operate with other unions. They wanted the state government to intervene in the field and rein-in syndicalism in the film labour sector.
