Although the country has numerous legislative mechanisms and institutional arrangements to tackle corruption,there has been slackness in implementing laws and lack of coordination between various probe agencies,Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday.
He added that ineffectiveness of some laws and policy gaps such as in the area of election funding and governance failure in several areas of public services delivery,that have contributed to the pervasiveness of corruption.
Seeking support from civil society to combat corruption he said,It is also important that other stakeholders,including the private actors and the civil society,come forward in shouldering some responsibilities and contribute to the efforts of public agencies in this endeavour.
He said that the finance ministry is in the process of renegotiating 75 double taxation avoidance agreements DTAAs to bring in more transparency and was also in talks with various countries to exchange bank account information.
Mukherjee was speaking at a conference of the ADB-OECD Anti-Corruption Initiative for Asia and the Pacific Region.
