In the first major election after the death of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the Congress received a major setback in the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation GHMC,winning just 52 seats. The main Opposition Telugu Desam Party bagged 45 seats. The Majlis Ittehadul-e-Muslimeen maintained its stronghold in Old City, winning 43 seats in the 150-member newly created GHMC.
No single party now has a majority but the Congress will take the support of MIM to form the body. The BJP won only five seats while the PRP won an embarrassing one seat. APCC president D Srinivas promptly blamed anti-Congress forces within the party and rebels who worked against the party.
