More than 900 cadets of the Police Training School at Manigam in Ganderbal went on a rampage on Wednesday, damaging the institutions building, vehicles parked outside, and then blocking the Srinagar-Leh national highway. Sources said that the cadets, upset at their passing-out parade being delayed, were reportedly protesting against their deployment for the Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin from June 28.
When the cadets were asked to report for duty, they started raising slogans against officers and damaged the building and some vehicles parked outside. They were miffed that their passing-out parade had been delayed, said a police source.
Minister of State for Home Sajad Ahmad Kitchloo said,Their passing-out parade was scheduled for February, but due to the situation in the Valley,it could not be conducted. That is why they held demonstrations. We have sorted it out and will soon come up with dates for the passing-out parade.
The protest which started on Wednesday evening continued throughout the night. Police officers had a tough time persuading the cadets to go back to their barracks after they blocked the highway.
After the massive street protests of 2008 and 2010,the police launched a recruitment drive, especially in the old city of Srinagar the separatist bastion. A large number of these youth were stone throwers and the police aimed at curbing protests and stone throwing incidents by engaging them. Police sources said that a good number of the cadets who went on a rampage on Wednesday belonged to the old city.
