At the height of the controversy between the two factions in the Nehru Memorial Museum amp; Library, which eventually saw historian Mridula Mukherjee continue in the Directors post despite prominent academicians and historians like Ramachandra Guha and Neera Chandoke protesting against her style of functioning,it turns out that both sides had petitioned the Prime Minister on the issue. The PM heard them out,but refused to get drawn into the debate. He is said to have conveyed that he would not want to intervene in the affairs of an autonomous organisation. The PMs non-intrusive stance is not new; he is learnt to have dealt the same card to the disputing Ambani brothers when they came knocking at the PMOs door for a resolution.
