With thousands of passengers stranded in over 20 trains in Assam,Railway Minister Mukul Roy on Tuesday called up Home Minister P Chidambaram and sought help from Central security agencies to resolve the crisis.
Sources said Roy told Chidambaram that there are a number of trains where the Railways was finding it hard to reach with food, water and other amenities. I have requested for more security deployment so that passengers are protected and we can at least reach the passengers with adequate amenities. I have also spoken to the Assam Chief Minister, Roy said in Delhi. Roy spoke to Chidambaram for over 15 minutes during which the Home Minister reportedly assured all assistance.
We are aware of the situation with the Railways. So we are making available additional forces in Assam. This being a law and order situation,it is up to the state government to utilise the forces, said Home Secretary R K Singh.
While a number of trains have been stalled at stations, local Railway officials have been arranging food and water at regular intervals. As an estimated 20,000 passengers are stranded in these trains, supply in many parts is proving to be a challenge as even the highways are blocked.
Railways is trying to regulate the train movement but has requested for providing adequate security, especially in the 54-km area between Srirampur and Salakati stations so that the trains held up in the region for more than 24 hours could be moved towards their respective destinations.
