The family of a CPM worker, who had committed suicide, have petitioned the party and the police alleging that he was forced to take the step after the party wanted to make him a proxy accused in an attack reportedly involving its cadres.

CPM worker P P Asharaf was found hanging in his house in Kochi on May 30,hours after he told his family that the party wanted him to be the first accused in a case pertaining to the attack on a criminal gang in Kochi. Asharafs wife Assora has complained to partys Ernakulam district secretary C M Dineshmani and the local police.

On May 24,a supari gang, led by Thammanam Shaji, was attacked by another gang, which, according to Shajis complaint to the police, was orchestrated by CPM leaders. According to Asoora, her husband had told her that two local party leaders had given his name as the first accused in the case. He had pleaded with the party leaders not to falsely implicate him in the case. Dineshmani termed the allegation as strange.
