While the BJP on Sunday accused the CBI of working in a partisan manner by targeting only the BJP-run states in the Sohrabuddin case, the Congress said the investigations in the case would go beyond the role of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah and close in on Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Sohrabuddin Sheikh was a terrorist from whose premises in Indore nearly 300 AK-47s were recovered. He used to operate an inter-state gang. Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are under CBI radar but the Andhra Pradesh angle in the fake encounter case is not being investigated at all as Congress is in power there, BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
The Rajya Sabha MP was confident that Shah, arrested on Sunday by the CBI in the case, would come out clean, claiming that the case against him was weak.
The CBI case against Shah is based on phone intercepts, which is not admissible as evidence in a court of law, sources in the BJP claimed.
The entire case against Shah is based upon sweeping investigations by the CBI without any legally sustainable evidence. This motivated investigation would boomerang on the Congress, Prasad said.
The Congress, however, said that Shahs arrest has made BJP extremely nervous as the party knows that the noose would now tighten around Modi.
Amit Shah was only a minister of state for home. He had the power to transfer police officers. But most of the transfers were made by Narendra Modi himself. The chief minister needs to answer a number of uncomfortable questions now, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said.
The BJP understands that the investigations would go beyond Amit Shah, that it would reach Modi. That is the reason why they are raising a hue and cry and trying to block further investigations, he said.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, another Congress spokesperson, lashed out at the BJP for casting aspersions on CBI investigations in the case.
Do they think that the CBI sleuths are a bunch of fools who would risk their entire career by making false allegations which are going to be scrutinised by the Supreme Court? he asked.
Meanwhile,the Gujarat BJP held
a mute rally in Ahmedabad where hundreds of party workers marched with black cloth around their mouth amid heavy rains. Senior party leaders, including party president R C Faldu and MLAs ,participated in the rally where there was no slogan shouting against the CBI or the Congress.
