Pakistan has formally invited the Hurriyat Conference for consultation on the way forward on Kashmir. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced this at a joint press conference in New York with Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Prime Minister of Pakistan occupied Kashmir PoK,Sardar Yaqoob Khan.

Qureshi, however, did not elaborate whether the invitation was meant exclusively for the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference. The new Pakistan government has so far steered clear of playing favourites between various separatist leaders. Publicly, the government has maintained a parity between Mirwaiz and his hardline counterpart Syed Ali Geelani.

Pakistan has also invited leaders of the Kashmir centres in London,Washington and Brussels for talks on Kashmir.

Qureshi stressed the need for a dialogue between India and Pakistan, saying it was the only way forward. I do not see any other appropriate alternate way to settle the bilateral disputes between the two neighbouring countries, Qureshi said.

At the press conference,Mirwaiz said he hoped New Delhi would come forward to resolve Kashmir dispute. We hope New Delhi will realise the ground reality and the world trends which essentially include negotiations and talks on resolving outstanding issues, Mirwaiz said.

Earlier in Srinagar,Mirwaiz had hinted at resumption of talks with New Delhi and in his address at the Organisation of Islamic Countries OIC foreign ministers8217; meet in New York,he said a dialogue between India and Pakistan would be meaningful only when India fulfills a set of conditions including demilitarization of Jamp;K.

He also called upon the Muslim countries to use their influence to help resolve the Kashmir issue. We trust you will bring your immense moral and political influence to bear on initiating a peace process, Mirwaiz said in his address. This peace process will lead to a speedy, just and honourable settlement of the dispute and restore to the people of Kashmir their inalienable right of self-determination.
