N GOPALASWAMI on Monday became the first Chief Election Commissioner CEC to demit office in the midst of an election season. While Gopalaswami oversaw the first phase of the five-phase general elections,Navin Chawla who takes over as the new CEC on Tuesday will preside over the remaining four phases.
While Gopalaswamis term he served as CEC for three years out of his total term of five years in the Commission saw a flurry of split decisions, with Chawla and him differing on many occasions, his last day in office was spent in the three-member Commission presenting a united front. I take leave from all of you in the Commission. Let me wish Chawla all the best and a very successful tenure as the Chief Election Commissioner, said the outgoing CEC as he hoped the Commission under Chawla would live up to its track-record in successful conduct of polls.
If Gopalaswamis last three years as CEC was described as eventful, his last day at Nirvachan Sadan was also spent in completing myriad formalities. There was a Commission meeting to be attended; salary papers and other official documents to be finalised; and a number of books to be returned to the EC library.
Gopalaswami also hosted a lunch for a Bhutanese delegation at a star hotel while he was later given farewell dinner in another star hotel. There were numerous requests for group photo opportunities by Nirvachan Sadan employees through the day, with a group of journalists, too, insisting on a photograph with Gopalaswami. All this while,Chawla,Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi and deputy election commissioners R Balakrishnan,J P Prakash and Alok Shukla kept him company. While Chawla takes over as the CEC on Tuesday,V S Sampath will take over as new Election Commissioner.
