In a goodwill gesture,Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah pardoned and ordered the release of Abdul Ahad Jan,the suspended policeman who had thrown a shoe towards Omar and Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda during the Independence Day parade at Bakshi Stadium.

Jan,who was charged with sedition, was remanded to five-day police custody on Monday. He was allegedly beaten up in custody after the incident and was taken to hospital after his condition began deteriorating. Doctors attending to him confirmed he had been tortured.

An official release on Tuesday said Omar had pardoned suspended Head Constable Abdul Ahad Jan and asked the police to withdraw the case against him. The state government said the release was ordered on extremely compassionate grounds.

Omar later called Jan to his residence and, according to the release, gave him a patient hearing.

Omar said: The holy month of Ramzan teaches us to be compassionate and to forgive everyone. My steps are in conformity with the teachings of Islam which does not teach hatred but only love and brotherhood.

The authorities had planned to send Jan home in Jamp;K government8217;s chopper along with Omar8217;s political adviser Mubarak Gul. Sources said when Jan reached the Nehru helipad,he fainted because of high blood pressure and was immediately taken to hospital.
