None of the 24 children on board Flight IX-812 survived

None of the 24 children,including four infants,survived the crash at Mangalore unlike recent air crashes that have seen children miraculously survive. Many children died with both their parents,others died with one of their parents leaving a parent and siblings to cope with the loss.

Eleven-year-old Nalanda Rai died with his mother Reshma and eight-month-old sister Viha. His father Santhosh Rai and a 16-year-old sibling were not on the flight. They were to come here later this week for a puja. Santhosh,a native of Mangalore,has been working in Dubai for close to 20 years. He is a broken man. Its difficult to console him. He came on Sunday and we carried out the cremation rituals, said a friend of Santhosh.

Five-year-old Ashton died with his father Dennis Saldanha,a photo studio owner in Dubai who hails from Mangalore. His mother Jenita and two-year-old brother Manuel had flown into Mangalore five days earlier. The family was scheduled to have a private function,said Leo Saldanha,a relative. We have to pick up the pieces and go on with our lives, he said after the funeral of Dennis and Ashton on Sunday.

The bodies of siblings,three-and-a-half-year-old Zubair Zaid and two-year-old Zainab Zaid,who were on the aircraft with their parents,Mohammed and Shameena Zaid,remained untraced. Incidentally,only one body among the 22 unidentified at the mortuaries around Mangalore is believed to be that of a child.

Three-year-old Naseer was not on the plane,but the crash wiped out his entire family after a car crash a couple of months ago killed his mother. Three of Naseers siblings,Suhaib Mohammed Naseer 8,Bibi Sara 11,Nabeeha Mohammed Naseer 6,were killed in the crash along with their father,Mohammed Naseer 42, a resident of Bhatkal who has been a businessman in Dubai for a few years. Two other children from Bhatkal,Abdul Barr 11 and Abanruknuddin 3,who were travelling with Abanruknuddins mother Afreen were also killed.

Among those who died was 12-year-old Godwina Thomas and her older sister Gloria from Mangalore. Other children identified in a list provided by the police are Mohammed Abubakar 4,Eshan Abdul Rehman 8,Rahul Jayaram 6,and Rida Ibrahim 9,all of whom hail from the Dakshina Kannada region. The infants on board included Haifa Hasha,Rashad Shafqat and Affan Ahmed. The other children on board as per the flights passenger manifest are Vaishnavi Narayan Rao,Hiba Azeena,Mushina,and Zeeshan Abdul Rehman.
