The government Saturday put on hold non-basmati rice export in the wake of litigation over the process adopted by the Commerce Ministry for implementation of an Empowered Group of Ministers EGoM decision allowing the export of 10 lakh tonnes of the same.
8230;operation and implementation of the allocation made in terms of Trade Notice of July 27 is stayed in view of the order passed by the High Court , Directorate General of Foreign Trade DGFT said in a trade notice issued Saturday.
Banned since 2008,rice export was allowed by the EGoM early this month in the wake of record food stocks. Subsequently,the DGFT under the Commerce Ministry notified the decision,inviting exporters to register their contracts on first-come,first-served basis for a maximum of 12,500 tonnes each between July 21-22.
Based on the applications received,by July 27,the DFGT had made allocations of total 10 lakh tonnes of non-basmati rice to 82 successful allottees.
However,on July 26,the entire process was contested in the Delhi High Court,following which it directed the government to make no allotment till the next date of hearing. Since the process of allotment was already completed by the time the interim order had been received,we are seeking further directions in the matter, the DGFT said in its trade notice Saturday,while announcing that rice export was being put on hold subject to outcome of the case.
