No common med entrance likely in 2012

The preliminary examination will be held on April 1 and the final examination will be held on May 13.

On Monday, the CBSE issued a statement saying that it would conduct an entrance examination only for 15 per cent all India quota undergraduate seats in 2012. The preliminary examination will be held on April 1 and the final examination will be held on May 13.

However,it seems that neither the undergraduate nor the postgraduate common entrance test for medical admissions may happen next year. The Health ministrys affidavit to the Supreme Court citing resistance from some states has put paid to the former. Also, the Medical Council of India MCI has submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court asking for the PG test to be put on hold.

Dr K K Talwar, chairman of the MCI board, said: A few days back,we submitted an affidavit saying that the PG entrance should be put on hold. There are logistics issues that cannot be sorted. AIIMS was asked to hold it as it already holds a test for 50 per cent medical seats but they had some staff issues. The CBSE,too, refused and MCI does not have an examination cell. These issues will need to be sorted first, may be we could ask the National Board of Examinations to hold it or even give extra staff to AIIMS to hold the examination. The entrance test was supposed to be held in January-February 2012.

MCI sources say the affidavit that states were opposed and hence, the undergraduate test should be out on hold was never formally conveyed to the council.
