The young woman who was found murdered along with Punjab police officer Balraj Singh Gill at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Ludhiana has been identified as a married mother of two who lived in the city. She was identified by her husband, whose family has a hosiery business. She was cremated after an autopsy.
Gill,a decorated officer who had the reputation of being upright, too was cremated with honours.
Police sources said they were working on multiple leads and were likely to question Kapilas husband later Friday evening. An honour killing angle is not being ruled out,the sources said.
It is learnt that no one from Kapilas in laws family was present at the civil hospital where the autopsy was carried out. The dead woman was cremated by her sister and brother.
Sources said the police were also looking at the several criminal gangs that DSP Gill had arrested or interrogated at various times across Punjab. A police officer is always vulnerable because we deal with criminals everyday. We are looking for someone who might have had a grudge against Gill, especially those who have been released or are out on bail, said a senior officer.
There is also a possibility that the officer and the woman were attacked by members of a criminal gang who generally target homes in isolated places, the officer added. They could have been inside the house when the officer entered. The injuries on both victims suggest the killers used homemade, raw kind of weapons, typically used by these gangs.
DSP Gills father K S Gill rubbished the honour killing theory. This is all wrong,a conspiracy to defame my son. My son was a bright child, student and officer. I cannot believe that he was involved with a woman, he said.
