Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday claimed that a Nigerian diplomat had sent threatening text messages to the Superintendent of Police for North Goa.
Although Parrikar did not elaborate on what these messages stated, sources said they warned that Nigeria would revoke visas of hundreds of Indians and throw them out. One of the messages, sent on Monday evening, said,If this is what your authorities want the ct is ready….
Jacob Nwadibia, administrative attache of Nigerian high commission had visited Goa to review the situation after the murder of a Nigerian youth on November 30 and the subsequent protest and arrest of Nigerian youth by the Goa Police.
Parrikar alleged that Nwadibia had not informed the Goan government about his visit and threatened state police officials. He was wrongly briefed and went to the extent of sending offensive SMSes to our Superintendent of Police, he said without naming the diplomat.
He also claimed that the diplomat had not come through a proper channel. He should have come through the Ministry of External Affairs. I never got any communication that anyone is coming, he said.
Sources, however, said the threats were not directed against a particular official but were directed at the Indian community living in Nigeria. The first message seemed to have suggested that if Nigerians were evicted because of their visa status then the Nigerian government would revoke the visas of Indians living in the country thereby having legal reasons to throw them out.
Another message demanded prompt action by the Goa Police and an update on the action taken so far. The message stated that the situation had been conveyed to the Nigerian Ambassador and action against Nigerians should be stopped.
All the messages were sent to North Goa Superintendent of Police Priyanka Kashyap. Kashyap declined to comment on the issue.
