New version of BrahMos test-fired successfully

India on Thursday successfully test-fired an advanced version of the 290-km range BrahMos cruise missile as part of trials by the Army from the Integrated Test Range ITR at Chandipur off the Orissa coast.

A Defence Research and Development Organisation DRDO official from Chandipur said the Block III version of BrahMos with advanced guidance and upgraded software,blasted off at 10.55 am from a mobile launcher at the test range near Balasore town. All telemetry,tracking stations,including naval ships near the terminal point,have confirmed the missions success, he said.

The test was witnessed by defence scientist Dr A Sivathannu Pillai,CEO of BrahMos,P Venugopalan,director,Defence Research and Development Laboratory,SP Dash,director ITR,and S Som,project director.

The BrahMos missile is a two-stage vehicle with a solid propellant booster and a liquid propellant ram-jet system. Developed jointly with Russia,it can be launched from multiple platforms such as submarines,ships,aircraft and land-based mobile autonomous launchers. It was last tested successfully on September 5 at a supersonic speed in steep-dive mode.

One regiment of the 290-km range BrahMos-I variant consisting of 67 missiles,five mobile autonomous launchers on 12215;12 Tatra vehicles and two mobile command posts,among other equipment is already operational in the Indian Army.

The Navy had begun inducting the first version of BrahMos missile system in all its frontline warships from 2005.
