The Maharashtra Government has agreed to shift the proposed Greenfield Navi Mumbai international airport a little to the south, although this shift of the non-aeronautical components will lead to less land being available for commercial purposes.
The state government had earlier indicated its willingness to sacrifice some area on the eco-sensitive northern part of the proposed airport, and shift it to the southern part, without compromising on the aeronautical aspects.
A senior state government official who is involved in the exercise admitted that they did not have land to the south of the project equivalent to the estimated 400 hectares that may have to be given up in the north. The 400 hectares included 150 hectares earmarked for open spaces for further expansion and transport facilities. However, with the state having only about 220 hectares of land in its possession in the south, the plan to earmark land for expansion and transport may have to be given up and the remaining land required for commercial purposes be acquired, he said.
The official suggested that it was possible for the commercial development on the southern end to go vertical and accommodate the proposed commercial projects.
