Never say die attitude

Shashi Tharoor enjoys the reputation of a go-getter with a never-say-die attitude. External Affairs Ministry officials recalled how the then diplomat had knocked on the doors of Indian politicians to finally get the backing of the Government of India for his bid for the post of the UN Secretary General. As the US support was not forthcoming,he approached some State Department officials and let them know how the US opposition to his candidature for the UNs top job could jeopardise the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. US Officials immediately got in touch with the Government of India to ascertain the veracity of Tharoors veiled threat. Much to the relief of the US State Department,the Government of India clarified that relations between the two countries were and would continue to be on sound footing,notwithstanding US stance on Tharoors candidature.
