The Nepal government on Saturday bowed to growing pressure from the international community as well as human rights groups and arrested an Army Major at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

The military police arrested Major Niranjan Basnet an accused in the torture and murder of Maina Sunuwar five years ago from Tribhuvan International Airport on his return from a UN peacekeeping mission in Chad.

Major Basnet, who had been assigned by the Nepal government to the mission, was sent back soon after his joining.

Apart from the Office of the Human Rights High Commissioner OHCHR,some ambassadors of the European Union, especially Denmark, are believed to have put pressure on the Nepal government to have Major Basnet arrested on his return.

His name figures as an accused in the death of 15-year-old Maina Sunuwar in Kavre in 2004. The government had acquitted Maj Basnet on the ground of lack of evidence. Maina was allegedly tortured and died during interrogation.
