Indian Music
In collaboration with Saroj Jhaveri Foundation,Uday Bhawalkar,an exponent of the Dhrupad style,who was trained by Zia Fariduddin Dagar and by the Rudra Veena maestro,Zia Mohiuddin Dagar,presented a recital at Mumbais National Centre for Performing Arts NCPA on February 1. He presented the typical dhrupad repertoire of aalap,jod,jhala and compositions based on the spring season.
The gaayaki of the Bhendibazar Gharana will be presented by Suhasini Koratkar in NCPAs Sangit Chintan,the Musical Reflections Series in association with Piramal Group on February 4. NCPA has held a series of workshops on the subject of Gharanas of Khayal gaayaki. Samanvaya,a Fusion Music concert with Ustad Zakir Hussain Tabla,Ranjit Barot Percussions and Balabhaskar Violin will be held on February 11.
Shashwati Mandal Paul Vocal and Radhika Umdekar Budhkar Vichitraveena will feature in the NCPA Umang Series Promotion of Promising Artistes with a Hindustani music recital on February 17. It is supported by the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation in the service of the arts. Budhkar is,incidentally,the first-ever lady Vichitraveena player. A rare and difficult instrument to play,Vichitraveena does not have frets; notes have to be produced by sheer dint of practice,in tandem with a pair of well-tuned ears. Budhkar has made a few changes in the instrument that allow her to produce sound effects of a contemporary stringed instrument,as yet unattempted by any Vichitraveena player. She plays both gatkari as well as dhrupad ang on Vichitraveena.
Basant Bahar,a Hindustani vocal music recital by Bhuvanesh Komkali and Manjiri Asnare-Kelkar will be held on February 24. The singers will capture the moods and emotions of the season.
Western Music
Tamás Vásárys Piano Recital,supported by The Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre,New Delhi,will be held on February 5. As a conductor,Vásáry has worked with over 100 orchestras. He returns to India after a gap of 35 years. Gratia,a Western music concert by The Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble,The Stop-Gaps Junior Choral Ensemble and several soloists in Soprano and Tenor will be held on February 6 in collaboration with The Stop-Gaps Cultural Academy. The programme includes the premiere of the Latin Mass,Missa Gratia,composed by Alfred J. DSouza. The concert is a thanksgiving to all those who have supported the Ensemble in their mission of Bridging The World With Song.
The Symphony Orchestra of India will present a Chamber Music concert on February 14. On February 15,Marouan Benabdallah will present a Piano recital. The Symphony Orchestra of India will present more Western Music concerts on February 17,18,22 and 26.
