Naxals release abducted villagers

Warn them against working with the administration.

All the 11 villagers who were abducted by Naxals on Saturday were released late night, with the warning that they would be killed if they worked for the government.

“Wo chahte hain hum unki party me shamil ho jaye. Hum unko khana nahi khilate, isliye aaj goli kha rahe hain (They want us to join their party. We don’t give them food,so they are targeting us).” This is what Laxman Koda,52,one of the abducted villagers, said on Sunday after reaching Kareli. Koda said he was beaten up but the rebels spared the youths. They were told that if they worked with the administration, they would be eliminated.

After being abducted, they were blindfolded and taken to the Naxal hideout in Raunakabad hills, barely 3 km from the village. They were made to walk for 20 km during the 18-hour captivity. After being freed by the Naxals, the abducted villagers spent the night in the forest and reached their village on Sunday morning.

The Naxals had attacked Kareli village early on Saturday morning and killed six persons — four of extremely backward caste Ghatwar and two tribals.

Laxman said: “They kept abusing us and warned against working for the district administration, especially for the police. They threatened to burn down the entire village if we did not discourage community policing.”

Sanjay Roy,16,who was abducted after the Naxals killed his father Sunil Roy,said they were made to sit with hands tied behind and added that they were released after the extremists took down the names of their fathers.

Shravan Koda,18,another abducted boy who too lost his father Narayan Koda to Maoist bullets, said the Naxals wanted all villagers to “help them and not the government”. They asked them if some people got money from the police to give information about Naxals’ movement and for guarding the village.

The village elders blamed the Naxal attack on the Yadavs of neighbouring villages — Bangalwa,Ladaitand,Kaithban and Banbarsa. They alleged that the residents of these villages supported the Naxals “directly or indirectly”.

Phulo Tanti, whose son Arun Tanti (32) was killed by Maoists on July 31,2010,said: “Naxals, backed by local Yadavs, first went against us when Kabir Koda,a tribal, became Bangalwa panchayat mukhiya in 2001 on a general seat. The Yadavs took it as the end of their dominance in the SC/ST-dominated areas of Dharhara. Naxal cadres, including a few Yadavs, killed mukhiya Kabir Koda on July 31,2008.”

Kabir Koda was instrumental in organising non-Yadav population and supported development projects. Since then an “enmity began between Yadavs and tribals/SCs”.
