Rajendra Namdeo,a landless labourer, accused panchayat secretary Satyanarayan Rao of reneging on his promise on August 15 near the Panchayat Bhavan as villagers watched him empty a poison bottle.

A man promised assistance for a housing scheme by a panchayat employee, allegedly to meet the villages sterilisation target, ended his life while the gram sabha meeting was in progress at Harnakhedi village in Chhindwara district.

Rajendra Namdeo,a landless labourer, accused panchayat secretary Satyanarayan Rao of reneging on his promise on August 15 near the Panchayat Bhavan as villagers watched him empty a poison bottle. The 32-year-old died during treatment at the district hospital in Chhindwara the next day bringing to light yet another instance of targeted sterilisation going wrong in Madhya Pradesh.

We are always under pressure to meet the target but things start getting worse when the year draws to a close, Rao told The Sunday Express admitting that he had signed Rajendras form as motivator. It was a mistake, he said, adding that Namdeo went under the scalpel on March 24 when the village was still short by two to meet the target of 12 family planning operations. The village of 1,200 had to find 12 individuals to meet the target.

Investigating Officer D Maskole said Devendras wife had been sterilised a few years ago. He said the family members backed Rajendras allegation against the panchayat secretary.

Rao claimed he never lured Rajendra with a promise of financial assistance for a house under the Indira Awas Yojana and did not understand why the victims family accused him. He said Rajendras mother was a beneficiary under the scheme.

Maskole said he had spoken to at least a dozen villagers who corroborated the allegations levelled by the victim in public. The Chand Police Station had not registered an offence till late Saturday, saying it would be done after taking statements of villagers.
