The monsoon session of Parliament is likely to be convened on August 7,more than a week later than normally held, owing to preoccupation of the government with the presidential and vice-presidential elections.
While the presidential poll will end on July 22,the vice-presidential elections will end only on August 7,when election and counting for the post takes place.
The UPA and BJP have to decide on a vice-presidential candidate within the next two weeks, given that July 20 is the last date for filing nominations for the vice-presidential polls.
In 2007,the monsoon session was similarly convened on August 10,a day after the vice-president was elected.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, however, will also have to convene a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs CCPA to deliberate on the date for monsoon session of Parliament. The committee was headed by Pranab Mukherjee but is now headless after he was named the UPAs presidential candidate and quit the government last month.
The UPA leadership will also have to decide on a suitable replacement as Leader of the House that fell vacant after Mukherjees exit.
Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde,Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy and Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath are the three top contenders for the post.
