In a cruel twist of fate,a 25-year-old labourer who won a Rs 1 crore bumper lottery prize got drowned in an irrigation pool Monday before he could get the money.

Unni,who eked out a living as a painter,won the prize in last months Karunya Lottery of the Kerala Government. However,he slipped into an irrigation pool and died before he could receive the prize money from the lottery department.

His family members said Unni had been under treatment for epilepsy and could have fallen into the pool after suffering from fits. A bachelor,Unni had planned to buy a farm plot using the prize money and build a house for his parents and siblings,they said. A Lottery Department official said the prize money would be given to Unnis legal heirs.
