A 33-year-old corporate executive from Alkapuri died at a city hospital after he consumed poison on Wednesday,a day after his wife filed a complaint with the police alleging dowry harassment and that he had slapped her many times.

Dinesh Kanjibhai Helaiyya,who worked as a deputy manager at Johnson and Johnson,had moved to Valiant Hotel in Sayajiganj on Tuesday evening after his wife filed the complaint alleging he demanded Rs 30 lakh as dowry. The couple had been married for five years.

Police said Helaiyya consumed poison in his hotel room on Wednesday and that they had found a suicide note.

The deceaseds wife,Manisha Helaiyya,and his brother Mukesh Helaiyya have been questioned. Manisha had allegedly told police that once their son started growing up,her husband would demand money every day.

Police said after consuming poison,Dinesh called his brother Mukesh,saying he had done so since his wife had embarrassed him by filing a police complaint. Mukesh informed Manisha and her relatives,who rushed him to Bhailal Amin Hospital,where Dinesh died.

After postmortem at Sir Sayajirao General Hospital,the relatives collected the body.
