Babulal Marandis brother escapes Naxal attack
Giridih: Nunulal Marandi,the younger brother of former Jharkhand CM Babulal Marandi,on Saturday escaped a bid on his life by the Maoists in the district,the police said here. Nunulal was inaugurating a campaign office of a Zila Parishad candidate for the ongoing panchayat elections at Chatro bazar under Deori police station when about six Maoists opened fire. Nunulals guards retaliated the firing and helped him escape. Nunulal is in the hit list of the CPI Maoist.
Armyman rapes 15-year-old in UP
Kanpur: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an Army jawan and his accomplices at Jaamu village in Bidhun here,the police said on Saturday. The girl alleged that she was raped by Brajendra and his associates on Friday evening when she had gone to the nearby fields to defecate,SP Rural Lal Bahadur said. The accused,who fled,also threatened her of dire consequences if she told about the incident to anyone,Bahadur said. Meanwhile,the girls relatives claimed the police was trying to hush up the matter. Efforts are on to nab the accused.
Schoolbus set on fire in Valley
Srinagar: Four miscreants,enforcing a shutdown called by the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference,set a schoolbus on fire here on Saturday. The driver saved a trapped six-year-old student,Atif Saleem,when the bus went up in flames. SP North,Showket Ahmad,said the police have got vital leads about the miscreants and they will be arrested soon.
Filmmaker Manish Acharya dies
MUMBAI: Filmmaker Manish Acharya,who shot to fame with the success of his directorial debut film Loins of Punjab,starring Shabana Azmi,died in an accident while vacationing in Matheran town. He fell off a horse and fatally injured himself. Acharya,in his late thirties,is survived by his artist wife Dhruvi Acharya and two sons.
Man kills wife with gelatine stick blast
Aizawl: A 50-year-old Myanmarese man killed his estranged wife by setting off an explosive under her pillow. H Ngunchhuma,placed a gelatine stick under the pillow of his 45-year-old wife Lenpari when she was sleeping at the home of their eldest son on Friday,Aizawl SP Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said. Lenpari had left her husband and was staying with her son for the past two weeks after perpetual violence by her husband,Khiangte said. The husband fled after the explosion,but was arrested later.
Navy ship nabs dhow with 19 foreigners
NEW DELHI: An Indian warship on anti-piracy patrols in the Arabian Sea has apprehended 19 foreign nationals,including 14 suspected Pakistanis,on board a dhow sailing suspiciously off the Bitra Island in the Lakshadweep Islands chain. INS Rajput,a Destroyer,was on patrol in the Exclusive Economic Zone west of Bitra when it spotted the dhow sailing suspiciously. The dhow,with 19 foreigners on board,is being escorted to Kavaratti in the Lakshadweep Islands to be handed over to the police.
