MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has appointed retired HC Judge M G Gaikwad to probe into Maval firing. The report is to be submitted in three months. Last month,a demonstration by farmers against a drinking water supply scheme from the Pavana dam turned violent. The police opened fire,killing three farmers.

Barnala to return to active politics

CHANDIGARH: Former chief minister Surjit Singh Barnala,once a close associate of CM Parkash Singh Badal,Saturday said he would re-enter active politics in Punjab. Barnala,who retired as Tamil Nadu Governor last month,said his Shiromani Akali Dal Longowal,would contest the Assembly polls scheduled for early 2012.

Bhubaneswar: Maoists in Malkangiri district shot dead a local BJP leader,a contractor,Friday evening suspecting him to be a police informer. Maoists asked contractor Purna Chandra Dalai,52,to come out from his house near Chitrakonda and gunned him down.

One more arrested in pilot licence scam

New Delhi: One more pilot has been arrested for allegedly using forged marksheets to get commercial flying licences and acting as a middleman,taking the total arrests in the case to 23. Dipak Daulat Asatkar,25,was absconding for the past six months,said DCP Ashok Chand. He was arrested from Mumbai on Friday.
