UN fears for kids as floods threaten towns

KARACHI: Flood waters threatened to engulf two towns in southern Pakistan on Saturday,a month after the disaster began,as the UN warned that tens of thousands of children risked death from malnutrition. High tides in the Arabian Sea pose a threat to towns in Sindh province such as Thatta,70 km from Karachi. The UN said aid workers were worried about disease and hunger,especially among children in areas where even before the disaster,malnutrition was high.

Carter arrives in US with freed American

Boston: Former US President Jimmy Carter arrived in Boston with Aijalon Gomes,who spent seven months in a North Korean prison for illegally crossing into the country. Gomes,31,was greeted by family members at Logan International Airport. “I am just joyful and grateful that my son is home,” Gomes’s mother Jacqueline McCarthy said. “I thank President Carter for making sure he is home safely. I thank God,I thank God,for everything everyone has done for us.”

ROME: Amanda Knox,the US student convicted in Italy of murdering her British roommate,has told an Italian lawmaker that she hopes to adopt children and be a writer when free. Lawmaker Rocco Girlanda said on Saturday that he kept a diary of his frequent visits with Knox in her Perugia jail,material that has formed the basis of a book being published in Italy and the US later this fall.

Cherie buys £1mn house for daughter

London: Cherie Blair has paid almost £1 million for a house for her daughter. The three-bedroom maisonette in a Georgian townhouse in central London becomes the eighth home in the Blairs’ property portfolio. The property was bought mortgage-free in the names of Cherie and her 22-year-old daughter Kathryn,Land Registry documents show.

Rwanda threatens to withdraw troops

JOHANNESBURG: Rwanda has threatened to withdraw its troops from UN peacekeeping operations if the world body publishes a report accusing the Rwandan army of committing genocide in Congo in the 1990s,Rwanda’s Foreign Minister said. Addressed to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,a letter from Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo says the report from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is “fatally flawed” and “incredibly irresponsible”.
