A near-bankrupt government somehow has money to waste and time on more of the ridiculous
Those who can,do. Those who cant, well, they lead. The Trinamool Congress has a manner of attributing decisions whereby the road always leads upwards to Our leader Mamata Banerjee. Not our chief minister, but almost always our leader. This is not only the mark of a party that still hasnt come to terms with the fact that its no longer the opposition. Its also the mark of a party uncomfortable with governing, unable to shed old rhetorical shorthands, exposing thereby how concentrated power remains at the top and how frivolous or ridiculous the exercise of that power can be while the rest of the party note West Bengals persistent confusion of government with party enjoys the nirvana of thoughtlessness.
So Mamata Banerjee now wants Kolkata painted blue,in what can only be called the whim of an individual. All government buildings, flyovers, roadside railings and taxis are soon to wear sky blue so will privately owned buildings on request because our leader,in her wisdom, believes the sky is the limit, having made that her governments motto. So if a sky blue Shahid Minar disappears into the blue of the sky, there may not be any need for the Kolkata Police to hunt for a thief. That could mean comfort for party and police, because Kolkata has been reporting a steady upward crime spiral of murders, robberies, etc .
Little is working in Kolkata; development and business arent coming in just because the CM has been calling for industry and investment. Instead,a practically bankrupt government, not satisfied with naming metro and suburban stations after writers and actors, must urge its departments to waste money on more ridiculousness, while not taking a single substantive urban initiative. With apologies to G.B. Shaw, that is how penny-wise,pound-foolish leaders do.
