Keeping busy

After his exit from the Samajwadi party,Amar Singh has been trying to keep himself preoccupied in various ways

After his exit from the Samajwadi party,Amar Singh has been trying to keep himself preoccupied in various ways. He has been lending himself to different causes including the creation of smaller states. The latest is that he is now helping out his dear friend from Bollywood Boney Kapoor. Singh has organised an exclusive screening of English Vinglish, the comeback film of Kapoors wife,Sridevi,at a multiplex in the capital and has sent out invites to all political friends and contacts including senior ministers in the government. It remains to be seen though, how many will actually turn up.

HELPING HAND

AT the Trinamool Congresss first major rally in the capital on Monday, the crowds were arranged mainly by party MP K D Singh and its MLA in UP Shyam Sunder Sharma. Singh has his base in Haryana and Punjab, while Sharma represents Manth, near Mathura,in the UP assembly. These were the nearest pockets of strength for the predominantly Bengal-based party, and bus loads of people came from these areas for the rally. But it was not like the TMC leaders did not get some supporters from Bengal as well. A few groups travelled from Howrah and Hoogly districts with local TMC banners. A few Bengali associations in Delhi were also activated. While Mondays crowd in Delhi was no match to Mamatas rallies in Bengal,TMC leaders claimed that the decent turnout was a big success.

GLARING OMISsION

WHILE the BJP has identified corruption as one its core planks against the ruling Congress,it appears to have little interest in the proposed anti-graft watchdog the Lokpal. During the three-day party conclave last week, none of the prominent leaders spoke about the Lokpal Bill, pending in Parliament,as the possible solution to the problem of corruption. Even the political resolution adopted at the conclave failed to make a mention of the Lokpal.

TWIN TARGET

FAMED DRDO Scientist Tessy Thomas has been in the news for her work as a pioneering missile scientist as the project head of the Agni IV nuclear capable missile. However,it is little known that her husband,a naval officer, has also now joined DRDO. The duo met Defence Minister AK Antony at a DRDO function in the capital where the minister chatted with them at length about the new innings. Incidentally,Thomas got the scientist of the year award from Antony at the function.
