Stung by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjees note to PM Manmohan Singh last year on the 2G spectrum allocation issue, members of the Congress sought to find holes in the document at a meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Tuesday.
The note had suggested P Chidambaram could have averted the scam,if he had,as the Finance Minister in 2008,insisted upon an auction.
JPC chairman P C Chacko said Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs of the Finance Ministry R Gopalan agreed that the then Finance Minister Jaswant Singh had given nod to a proposal on a reduction of fee for awarding UAS licences, without examining its implications. The decision, according to Chacko, resulted in a loss of Rs 968 crore for the initial four years and Rs 886 crore per year thereafter.
