In a twist to the continuing Orissa Refractory Industries Ltd (ORIND) imbroglio at Lathikata,near here,former Managing Director of ORIND group of industries,Kashi Prasad Jhunjhunwala was arrested for fraud and remanded in judicial custody.
The septuagenarian businessman,Jhunjhunwala (70) who claimed to have distanced himself from the management of ORIND since 1998,renamed as Shaswat International Orind ltd,was yesterday arrested in a cheque bounce case dating back to 1997 from his Lathikata residence as there was a non-bailable arrest warrant pending against him,SP,Rourkela,Himanshu lal said.
The former MD was also booked under a fresh case for misappropriating statutory dues of employees. About 600-odd employees of ORIND have been agitating demanding re-opening of Lathikata unit of refractory industries which was illegally declared closed by the management from May,15,2011,A.P.Ray,General Secretary CITU-led Orind Employees Association said.
Meanwhile,the Orind Employees Association has decided to stage dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s residence at Bhubaneswar from October 2,in support of the demand which includes reopening of the factory,payment of arrears and wages,Mohanty,General secretary of CITU,said.
The Orind management has remained adamant without considering employees demand and as well as Orissa Government’s instructions. The employees have not received their wages/salaries for the last one year,P.F amounts of employees have not been deposited with P.F. Commission and dues of retired persons and those died during service have also not been paid,Ray said adding that the total dues of employees would be more than Rs 20 crores.
Cases have been filed against the present chairman of Orind industry,Rabin Jhunjhunwala and other directors of the Orind group on charge of misappropriating statutory dues of employees,he said.
