Jaitley asks BJP to avoid hit-wicket on issue of leadership

Narendra Modi,Jaitley said creating a controversy over the BJPs electoral leadership would amount to giving away the game to the rivals.

BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Saturday cautioned the partys top brass against a hit-wicket scenario in the run-up to the general elections.

There is no effective leadership in the UPA. Given this leadership deficit, the electorate is looking towards the BJP, Jaitley said at a meeting of the partys Legal and Legislative Cell.

Without naming the partys chief campaigner,Narendra Modi,Jaitley said creating a controversy over the BJPs electoral leadership would amount to giving away the game to the rivals.

At times, even within the parliamentary system, the elections turn into a presidential form when the leader commands huge popularity. This has happened in the case of Atal Bihari Vajpayee,Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in the past, Jaitley said. If it becomes an anti-incumbency election,a referendum on leadership,no power in the world can defeat us. Except,we should not get a hit-wicket. That could be the only way for defeat.
