Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihar Vajpayee is the former Prime Minister of India and was elected to the position twice in 1996 and 1999. A member of the Bhartiya Janta Party, Vajpayee is also known for his great oratory skills. Apart from being a politician, he has is also an acclaimed writer who has written various poems. Vajpayee had joined the Quit India Movement in 1942 as a student leader. He was awarded India\'s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna in 2015 on his

birthday. His birthday, 25 December, was also declared as the Good Governance Day by Narendra Modi government. Vajpayee was also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and worked as a journalist for a short period before he joined BJP. He was the first non-congress political leader who became the Prime Minister of India. He went to jail during the JP Narayan movement when emergency was declared by Indira Gandhi government.

New Delhi, Jan 09 (ANI): While addressing the Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas on Saturday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that the day is dedicated to overseas Indians. Explaining about the day, Swaraj said in the year 2003, under the leadership of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a decision was taken to celebrate Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas on January 9. She further stated that the reason behind selecting January 9 for Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas was that Mahatma Gandhi had returned from South Africa on this day in 1915 and this day is being celebrated across the world.
