Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Thursday that marriage within the same gotra was not appropriate and that khap panchayats work like social organisations.

Meanwhile,a couple from Leda Khas village in Yamunanagar district alleged that they faced social boycott and threat to life because they were from the same village.

On May 27,Mahabir and Ritu got married in an Arya Samaj Mandir in Ladwa,against the wishes of their families and the pachayat. Last week,the panchayat issued directions that they should not be allowed to enter the village and their families should be boycotted socially.

Mahabir then approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for police protection. A police officer said that they have been provided protection.
