Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has ordered a probe into allegations that phones of several politicians, bureaucrats, journalists were intercepted by the Himachal Pradesh CID and the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau during the previous BJP regime.
The investigation would be conducted by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, now under a new chief,Additional DGP Prithvi Raj. His predecessor,K C Sadyal, was transferred out soon after Virbhadra took power,as was DGP I D Bhandari, who headed the CID when the tapping took place.
Its a serious matter. I have recommended to entrust investigation to the Vigilance and the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Strict action will be initiated against officials who are found to have a role in illegal phone tapping, Virbhadra said Saturday.
The number of phones tapped 1,139,including Virbhadras, according to the State Forensic Lab which scanned computers seized from the CID indicated malafide intentions of the previous government, the chief minister added.
Chief Secretary Sudripta Roy said all the phones were tapped in the last six months of the BJP government led by Prem Kumar Dhumal.
Dhumal, meanwhile, washed his hands off the matter but demanded a probe by a sitting judge of the High Court.
