The exhaustive Dictionary of Indian Plant Gums,Resins,Dyes & Related Products (Sidrah Publishers) by Dr M I H Farooqi is a unique effort in that it combines content with utility, helping the scholar and entrepreneur alike.
Guar Gum alone helps Indian exporters rake in foreign exchange worth Rs 1,000 crore-plus. My aim was to contribute a ready reckoner of names that would help manufacturers from across various regions to avail them even from tribal regions with the help of their native names, says the author who has served as former deputy director of National Botanical Research Institute of India,Lucknow.
The dictionary puts at your fingertips all the information you need about gums, resins and dyes originating from vegetation.
Besides giving in alphabetical order the names of each,it also gives the reader every known synonym in various languages.
Most names included are of plants of Indian origin, but those of foreign origin find mention too, adds Dr Farooqi, who has to his credit several other books, including Plants of the Qur’an,which elaborates the medicinal or therapeutic values of all fruits, herbs, vegetables and seeds that find reference in the holy book.
The dictionary also assumes commercial importance for the extensive list of Indian manufacturers and exporters of plant gums, resins and dyes it carries at the end.
Delhi-based enterprises, including Vedams Books,Bagchi Publishers,UBS Distributors and Publishers and International Books, are making the book available to those involved in the study or trade of gums, dyes and resins. Dr Farooqi, who did four years of extensive research to compile the dictionary, has been associated with a number of organisations in India and Europe dealing in carbohydrate products.
