Gogoi orders probe into Dispur violence

The Assam government has finally ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident of the anti-eviction rally turning violent leading to the death of three persons in police firing.

The Assam government has finally ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident of the anti-eviction rally turning violent leading to the death of three persons in police firing at the state capital complex at Dispur on June 22.

Official sources quoting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said a High Court judge would be entrusted the task of inquiring into the circumstances leading to the violence. While three persons including a nine-year old boy were killed in police firing,at least 20 police personnel including SSP Deepak Chaudhuri were among the 40-odd persons injured in the incident.

The Assam government had earlier instituted an official level inquiry headed by state Additional Chief Secretary Surajit Mitra to carry out an inquiry into the incident.

On June 22,a demonstration organized by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti KMSS to register protest against an eviction drive carried out by the government on hills and wetlands in Guwahati,had turned violent.

The police had subsequently arrested KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi. Gogoi,who was initially remanded to three days police custody is currently under judicial custody and is undergoing treatment in the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.

The incident,which evoked a lot of public debate in the state,also led to the transfer of six IGPs of the Assam Police including two who were directly responsible for law and order in the state capital.
