Garbage row leaves Nitish govt red-faced

If Patna looked clean and largely garbage-free during the last two days, residents have Legislative Council Chairperson Tarakant Jha to thank.

If Patna looked clean and largely garbage-free during the last two days, residents have Legislative Council Chairperson Tarakant Jha to thank. On Tuesday as RJD legislator Nawal Kishore Yadav took up the issue of poor garbage disposal in the House and sought to know from Urban Development Minister Prem Kumar what measures had taken to clear garbage heaps,Jha admitted to lack of an effective system.

Just when the minister was trying to defend the state government,Jha said,Even I had to pay Rs 150 to a tractor driver engaged by Patna Municipal Corporation to clear the garbage from main SK Nagar where I had gone to attend a marriage recently.

While the RJD MLA was happy to see the government embarrassed, the minister ordered the PMC to clean up the city within 24 hours.

Yadav also had questions on the state governments much-publicised promise of constructing Ganga river link

Talking to The Indian Express,PMC commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pal said the corporation had a definite alternative plan to clean up the city after A2Z Infrastructure Pvt Ltd stopped door-to-door garbage collection in August over non-payment of Rs 7,66 crore. A2Z had come to Patna in 2009 amidst much expectation to provide permanent solution to garbage disposal, but failed to meet expectation. While the company said the government had been delaying its payment, the PMC said the firm had over-billed. The matter is before a Patna court.

Pal said,We are floating open global tenders for door-to-door garbage collection, lane clean up and taking entire city garbage to selected points in peripheral areas.

Pal said the PMC had 1,800 staff to take care of the entire city that generates 694 metric tonnes waste per day.
