With outgoing Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishanan not showing much interest in occupying the post of chairman of the National Human Rights Commission NHRC after he demits office on May 12,the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is not keen to amend the NHRC Act. The proposed amendment, which the Centre had already conveyed to the Supreme Court, would have made retired judges of the Supreme Court eligible for the post of NHRC chairperson. At present, only a retired CJI,who is below the age of 70 years, can be appointed to the post. Given the dearth of CJIs below the age of 70 years there are only two candidates now the Centre was mulling amending the law.
