Finance Minister P Chidambaram Saturday hoped the Food Security Bill, which aims to provide subsidised foodgrain to the poor, would be passed in the ongoing budget session.

The National Food Security Bill is a promise of the UPA government. I am confident it will be passed soon, possibly in the budget session itself, he said. The session, which went into a months recess Friday, will end on May 10.

The cabinet has already cleared amendments to the Bill that would guarantee 5 kg of foodgrain a month to about 70 per cent of the countrys population at subsidised rates of Re 1 to Rs 3 per kg. The government has set aside Rs 10,000 crore in this years budget for estimated incremental cost under the Food Security Act.

Chidambaram also said the government was steadily and surely working on the next generation of reforms.
