The Finance Ministry mandarins are going through unusually tough times these days. And no,it is not the global financial crisis,but the frequent change of their minister which is to be blamed. Pranab Mukherjee is the third person to head the ministry in the last two months. When P Chidambaram was made Home Minister,the Finance Ministry was kept by the Prime Minister. But the Parliament questions related to the ministry were being answered by Chidambaram. For the officers,that meant briefing two people at the same time. With the Prime Minister out of the scene on health grounds,they now have to deal with yet another minister. In fact,for most of Friday,the babus spent their time preparing and briefing Mukherjee on the ministry and the upcoming interim budget which holds political significance.
