Their ministry expects them to undertake official journeys by train, but flights seems to be the desired mode of travel for senior Rail Bhavan officials. So they are now pushing the ministry to significantly liberalise the guidelines governing air travel for senior officials. Citing extremely restrictive internal instructions on air travel issued by the ministry, these officials want to be allowed to take flights when they are attending duty outside their respective zonal railways. They also want the finance concurrence needed for approval of air journeys to be dispensed with. The ministry is now trying to find a way out of the situation, which it feels could lead to bad publicity, given the manner in which Railways have often positioned itself against airlines.
