Ex-Union minister Ibrahim,Shariefs kin in 3rd Cong list

Former civil aviation minister C M Ibrahim and the grandson of former railway minister C K Jaffer Sharief,Rehman Sharief, are among eight persons

Former civil aviation minister C M Ibrahim and the grandson of former railway minister C K Jaffer Sharief,Rehman Sharief, are among eight persons who won the Congress nod on Monday to contest the May 5 Assembly polls in Karnataka, leaving only two hotly disputed seats undecided ahead of the April 17 deadline for nominations.

In what is seen as a balancing act of the interests of different senior Congress leaders,C M Ibrahim,a loyalist of backward caste leader Siddaramaiah, was given the Bhadravati ticket over two-term Congress MLA B K Sangameshwar who has threatened to contest as an Independent.

Rehman Sharief,a political novice, was given preference for the Hebbal seat in Bangalore over H M Revanna,a Siddaramaiah loyalist.

The Congress on Monday also appeased filmstar and Vokkaliga leader M H Ambareesh by replacing its candidate for the Srirangapatna constituency in south Karnataka after the filmstar threatened to boycott filing his own nomination in Mandya.

A S Ravindra whom Ambareesh has accused of consistently working against Congress candidates in the Gowda heartland has been replaced by a loyalist of the filmstar,S L Lingaraju. A film producer,Munirathna Naidu, and an RSS rebel,Shakunthala Shetty, are among the other candidates preferred in the latest list of eight.
