The DRDO had a tough time at the Aero India show in Bangalore this week. For starters,no questions were directed to its chief at the opening press conference, forcing the organisation to host an unscheduled press meeting later in the week. However, there its chief M Natarajan was left fielding questions on delays in defence projects, and reacted by blaming each organ of the Government for it. The political class,he said, did not understand the way things work; the manufacturers (like HAL) could not get production lines started; while the armed forces, according to him, preferred a perfumed soap from Paris to a desi Hamam. Listening to this ranting by the top scientist,a senior Defence Ministry official remarked that DRDO was the only holy cow left in the country.
