Tribe Rider
Delhi-based designer Jenjum Gadis first store in the Capital has kept him busy, such that he decided to take it easy at the fashion week. But,Gadis latest autumn-winter collection titled The Clan is doing the talking at his stall at Pragati Maidan. Anarkalis, drape dresses, tunics and jackets in bright colours with crafty embroidery keep many buyers busy on Day One. I have modernised and glamourised memories in this collection. As a child growing up in Tirbin,Arunachal Pradesh,my grandparents used to tell me stories of our clan hunting and surviving. These, along with my signature Northeastern tribal motifs and borrowed elements from my previous ranges form this collection, says Gadi. The ensembles exude both evil and innocence and for that balance, its Gadis stall that deserves a visit.
East meets west
Like Gadi, designer Atsu Sekhose too looks homeward for inspiration in tribal motifs. This is where the similarity between the two ends. Its only the colours that he saw growing up that find place in his recent autumn-winter line of eveningwear.
This is inspired by Hollywood costumes and couture references. The main colours I have used are black, white and red, that are also the colour aesthetic one sees in the Northeast, he explains,as buyers wait outside his stall. Gowns and dresses in silks with sequins and hand embroidery entice many towards this stall.
Hues and Weaves
Delhi-based Kashmiri designer Zubair Kirmani finds a story in colours and fabrics. Kirmanis autumn-winter 2013 collection reflects this simple approach to fashion as he displays menwear and womenwear in the stall area. Formal shirts, short kurtas, achkans, jackets and suits for men,and shift dresses, shirts dresses, wraps and draped jackets for women form this collection. Its light-weight and wearable and I have used fabrics such as satin, chanderi and chiffon, he says. Dark colours such as olive green, brown, blue and prettier shades such as blue and onion pink form the colour palette.
Inside Out
Though Goa-based Wendell Rodricks infectious energy and positivity might be missing from the ramp this season, his clothes manage to exude his charm at the stall. Fuss-free fabrics such as crepe, satin and georgette with easy garden colours such as green, yellow, blue, brown and orange dominate the line. One portion of the range that gets us excited is the reversible line of kaftans and overdrops in linen.
All the glamour and glitz might be on the runway, but this season do not miss the stalls. You will be pleasantly surprised.
